I. ABF SYSTEM
The increase in regulations for recycling drain water is for most growers a motive to pursue new more effective methods of disinfecting systems, preferably with a natural purifying principal as a basis. Growers want to gain the lead on the different diseases that can spread to the plants when using a drain water recirculation system.
Pathogenic fungi and bacteria cause plant diseases. But they also have natural enemies. These anti-disease organisms fight those which cause disease. If there is equilibrium in the water, then the beneficial organisms destroy the majority of the harmful ones. Two companies: Wise Use International BV and Van Etten Techniek B.V. developed an advanced water purification system named Automatic Biological Filter System, which creates that necessary equilibrium. The result: healthy, strong plants.

The Automatic Biological Filter System cleans through the unique combination of:
- a filter medium of lava grains;
- a rotation system that reverses the filter medium by means of air;
- addition of the biological activator PoCo.

II. WHY DO WE USE THESE THREE COMPONENTS?
PoCo increases the breakdown process of burdening compounds, by breaking them down to simpler ingredients. The pollutants are filtered down by the sedimentation process and some-what clear floatant water is passed on to the chamber with lava grains.
The lava grains have a higher porous contact, in contrast to sand and gravel. Through the addition of the activator PoCo, millions of bacteria will be developed in the pores. PoCo stimulates and accelerates the growth of micro-organisms in a natural way by micro-nutriment and trace elements, which are being contained in PoCo.
The micro-organisms together with PoCo fulfil their tasks faster and better.
The rotation system enlarges the contact between the contaminated water and the bacteria. There is no necessity for adding any bacteria’s, as there are beneficial bacteria already present in water.

III. HOW DOES THE ABF SYSTEM WORK?
The drainwater from the glasshouse is collected in the wastewater tank. From there, it is pumped into the ABF. The water to be treated is channelled through the lava grains in the filter.

A directional tubing system in the filter bed blows air into the lava layer, from bottom to top, to turn it over. In this way, the ideal level of contact between the active bacteria and the water being treated is achieved. The oxygenation is also necessary for (aerobic activity) aerobic bacteria. A part of the activated-bacteria-carrying water is recycled back to the reservoir to make the process faster. This results in all the fine organic contaminants in the water - such as fungi, algae and moulds - being broken down.

The air pumped through tubing system also prevents the ABF System from becoming blocked. At the bottom of the filter, the water is collected and channelled into the clean-water tank. From there, it can be pumped back into the glasshouse.

The system is operated from a central control panel, and sensors monitor every part of the process.Depending on the level of contamination in the water being treated, the ABF System can also be cleaned from time to time. In short, it allows the grower complete control over the system.
